ALEC Energy Wins “Energy Company of the Year” Award

Sustainability Innovation Awards 2022, hosted by BNC Publishing, is one of the leading events applauding the achievements of the region’s sustainability initiatives and projects from all sectors in the Middle East.

In October last year, the United Arab Emirates announced the UAE Net Zero by 2050 Strategic Initiative, a national drive to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, making the Emirates the first Middle East and North Africa (MENA) nation to do so.

The UAE has always been a front-runner in spearheading change and building a tolerant, modern society. The country is now committed to cementing its role on climate change in the region and taking this key economic opportunity to drive development, growth, and new jobs. The Sustainability Innovations Awards 2022 reflect the leadership’s vision for the country.

ALEC Energy, established in 2015 is a related business division of ALEC Engineering and Contracting and offers a complete turnkey solution for both rooftop and ground mounted solar PV plants. In a country where solar is the natural solution for clean power, ALEC Energy has established itself as a reliable provider that combines technical know-how and experience to deliver a cost-effective solution for its clients.

Congratulations to the entire ALEC energy team for winning this award.

ALEC launches subsidiary to revamp data centre construction across MENA

ALEC Group has announced the establishment of its newest subsidiary, Alec Data Center Solutions.

The newly formed entity will focus on three primary lines of business — traditional data center construction solutions, prefabricated solutions, and modernization and retrofit solutions.

The company will employ the group’s in-house civil, MEP, and technological expertise to help corporations and hyperscalers construct large-scale, customized data centers for cloud service delivery, mission-critical workloads, and disaster recovery.

It will also be the first entity in the MENA region to focus on liquid immersion technologies, resulting in more sustainable, customizable, and cost-effective data centers, a statement said. ALEC Data Center Solutions will open its experience center in the coming weeks, enabling clients and prospects to review solutions first-hand, a statement said.

“Until now, cost, expertise, logistics, customizability, and scalability have all presented formidable challenges to regional organizations looking to establish their own data centers, hampering their ability to innovate at pace and scale,” said Kez Taylor, CEO at ALEC. “With our entry into the rapidly advancing data center space, ALEC is set to fill the void for a single, large-scale specialist organization that can offer the entire gamut of data center development services.”

With its prefabricated data center line, manufactured at its Dubai facility, the company will be able to offer scalable, edge-type deployments across multiple or remote sites in the region.

Through its partnership with Submer, an innovator in advanced immersion cooling solutions for cloud and edge computing, the company aims for data center energy efficiency with solutions that help save 50 per cent on capex building costs, up to 95 per cent on cooling expenses, and more than 90 per cent water usage for cooling purposes, the statement added.

“ALEC Data Center Solutions is perfectly positioned to cater to the region’s growing demand for world-class data centers. Building on the strengths of the broader ALEC Group allows us to draw from a vast pool of resources and expertise to deliver the next-generation data centers that will power the digital transformation of enterprises in the region,” said ALEC Data Center Solutions spokesperson, Bjorn Viedge.

Saudi Arabia Awards SR2.8b Contract for Region’s ‘Largest Water Theme Park’ at Qiddiya

A SR2.8 billion contract has been awarded to build Saudi Arabia’s first water theme park, and which aims to be the region’s largest of its kind. It will take shape at Qiddiya, a new multi-purpose destination being developed by the Kingdom as one of its ‘giga-projects’. Qiddiya will be a ‘new city’ located outside of Riyadh.

A joint venture featuring ALEC Saudi Arabia Engineering and Contracting and El Seif Engineering Contracting has bagged the Dh2.8 billion contract for the Qiddiya Water Theme Park.

The project awards were handed out by the operating entity, Qiddiya Investment Company. (Parts of the Qiddiya mega-destination is scheduled to open in 2023.)

The park, set on 252,000 square metres, will have 22 rides and attractions – including nine that will be “world-firsts”. Some rides have been designed to use 75 per cent less water compared to conventional rides at other water parks. Rainwater that falls on the site will also be captured, treated and reused.

“The Qiddiya Water Theme Park will be a year-round immersive family entertainment destination, the first of its kind and offering experiences that have never before been offered in Saudi,” said Abdullah bin Nasser Aldawood, Board Member and Managing Director, Qiddiya Investment Co..

The park will have technologies to reduce water pressure on certain rides, which will reduce water evaporation by half. In addition, every pool within the destination will be based on a ‘run-out’ concept, so that “at the end of an exciting slide individuals will glide safely across a shallower pool that uses less water unlike traditional deeper pools used in other water parks”.

El Seif, part of the joint venture that will build the water theme park, has figured in projects such as the Kingdom Tower, Princess Noura University and Haramain High Speed Rail Rabigh Station. The joint venture with ALEC was struck to take on “large complex projects” in the Kingdom.

ALEC entered the Saudi market through an office in Riyadh in late 2020.
